It can help pandemic planning by speeding up calculations.
CFRs are all estimates. The ultimate Case Fatality Rate for COVID-19 is unknown because the pandemic is still unfolding, but 3.8% is the current global (crude) figure (16 March 2020). For Italy, it's 7.3%.
