Animation showing a pair of black holes orbiting each other. Space-time around the black holes is distorted and this bends the light. This creates arcs of light called Einstein rings. As the black holes rotate, they emit gravity waves that distort space-time. Losing energy, the black holes collapse into each other and emit a strong gravitational wave pulse, rather like a space quake.
